“Accords” opens at PACT Zollverein Essen

The new creation of ZOO opens on the 2nd of May 2008 at PACT Zollverein in Essen. Shortly after, Accords will be presented at Kunstenfestivaldesarts Brussels, Alkantara Lisbon and International Festival of Salamanca. In Accords , Thomas Hauert continues his research on body and movement, focusing more specifically on the relationship between dance and music. Dance and music are parts of a classic combination, perhaps even the very first one… Anyone watching Accords might think that they are seeing a choreography written to music, because ZOO’s dancers attempt to come as close as possible to the precision found therein. Yet the process of creating movement turns out to be radically different here. It involves a “democratic” process, based on individual freedom and permanent attention being paid to others: a process aimed at obtaining a choreographic complexity beyond that of a written piece. Thomas Hauert chooses to rely on the intuitive intelligence of the body and the group.

“Hà Mais” goes on tour again

In 2008, ZOO/Thomas Hauert is celebrating its 10th anniversary. For this occasion, ZOO reprises two shows: Cows in Space , its very first piece, and Há mais , a project that is very dear to Thomas Hauert. Há mais (“there’s more”) was created in 2002 with 5 dancers from Maputo, Mozambique, as a part of the project “Alma Txina”. In the summer 2008, the piece will be restaged with the original dancers in CCN de Franche-Comté in Belfort and then go on a concentrated tour passing by Theater Spektakel in Zurich, La Bâtie in Geneva and Kaaitheater in Brussels. For this re-run, Há mais will be presented with the piece Mafalala2 by the Mozambican choreographer Panaïbra Gabriel and its company Culturarte.

ZOO restages its first performance “Cows in Space”

To mark the 10th anniversary of its creation, Thomas Hauert’s ZOO dance company is restaging its very first piece: Cows in Space . This is an exceptional opportunity to see (again) a show that was an award-winner at the renowned Rencontres chorégraphiques de Seine-Saint-Denis in 1999 and took this Brussels dance company all the way to Japan. The national and international reprise of Cows in Space will be launched in Brussels’ Kaaitheater on 25 and 26 January – the start of a year of celebrations for ZOO.
